Why a phone-and-internet-only plan is fragile

Nearly every household communication plan today has a single point of failure: it assumes cell service and internet connectivity both work. That assumption holds for the vast majority of ordinary days, and fails precisely during the events worth planning for — a regional grid failure, a damaged cell site, or the wider infrastructure-strain scenarios covered in Catastrophic Scenarios. A communication plan that only specifies who to call (see Building a Family Communication Plan) still needs a channel that works when the usual ones don’t.

What to actually build

  • A mesh-network radio setup, such as the open-source Meshtastic project: inexpensive, battery-efficient LoRa radios that relay short text messages device-to-device, forming a local network with no cell towers, no internet, and no subscription required. Range is limited — typically a few miles line-of-sight, more with elevation — but that’s often enough to keep a neighborhood or family group connected when phones go dark.
  • An amateur (ham) radio license, at minimum the entry-level Technician class: inexpensive, requires passing a short written exam, and grants access to frequencies with far greater range than any consumer device. It’s also backed by a trained, organized emergency-response network that activates during real disasters.
  • Printed backups of the essentials: your out-of-town contact’s number, key medical information, and a basic map — anything you’d need if every device you own were dead or unreachable.
  • Practice before you need it. A radio you’ve never turned on is not a plan; run a test message or a short check-in with family or neighbors at least twice a year.
Why ham radio specifically

Federal regulation establishes the amateur radio service specifically to provide voluntary, noncommercial emergency communications — it's not a hobbyist curiosity but a recognized part of the emergency-response system in most U.S. communities.

What this doesn’t solve

Neither option replaces a functioning cell network for most day-to-day communication, and both require some upfront learning that’s much harder to do mid-crisis than in advance. Radios also don’t substitute for the relationships described in Community and Local Networks — a working radio is only as useful as the people on the other end of it.
