This chapter covers what's actually deployed today, what a robot body can and can't yet do, and the labor and control questions embodiment raises that a software-only AI does not.

Why this chapter exists

Every other chapter in this manual treats AI as software: a model that writes, reasons, persuades, or decides. A humanoid robot adds a body — weight, momentum, hands, and in a fielded few cases, a weapon. That changes the argument in ways worth treating on their own terms: embodiment brings new labor economics (a robot in a warehouse competes for a different set of jobs than a chatbot does), new safety questions (you cannot pause a robot mid-task the way you can a language model), and new governance stakes (a robot dog with a rifle is a procurement decision, not a research paper).

This chapter is deliberately skeptical of demo footage. Where a capability is real and deployed, it says so plainly; where it is a company claim, a preprint, or a keynote preview, it says that too.

What this chapter covers

The state of the field separates real commercial deployment from marketing demos and teleoperation dressed up as autonomy. How AGI-era foundation models change robot capability explains the technical shift from hand-programmed control to models trained the same way large language models are. Military humanoid and ground robots and the laws of war cover what militaries are actually building, buying, and in documented cases arming — and who is allowed to pull the trigger. Physical labor and the robot economy, domestic robots, and household privacy and control bring the analysis back to what a robot body means for a job, a home, and the people in it.
