Psychological preparedness: staying grounded under uncertainty
What disaster psychology says about the difference between healthy vigilance and doom-paralysis — and how to engage with AI risk without either denial or chronic anxiety.
Two failure modes, one mistake
This manual’s house rules put it plainly: no doom performance and no dismissal-by-default, because both waste the same amount of everyone’s time. Psychologically, they’re the same mistake in different directions — one person manages discomfort by refusing to look at the risk at all, another manages it by never looking away. Neither produces better decisions than a person who looks at the evidence, forms a proportionate view, and gets on with normal life.
What the research actually shows
Disaster psychology has studied this trade-off directly, mostly around media coverage of collective trauma rather than AI specifically, but the mechanism generalizes. After the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, researchers found that people who repeatedly consumed graphic bombing coverage reported higher acute stress than people who had actually been at the scene — exposure to the worst-case narrative, not the event itself, drove the distress. The same logic applies to any low-probability, high-consequence risk: unbounded consumption of worst-case material is itself a variable you’re choosing, and it doesn’t come free.
The flip side also has evidence behind it. Research on climate anxiety — a comparably diffuse, hard-to-personally-control threat — found that engaging in collective action weakened the link between anxiety and depressive symptoms, while individual action alone didn’t move the needle. Doing something concrete and shared, not just reading more, is what changes the emotional trajectory.
Practical framing
Two habits follow directly. First, time-box risk-focused reading the way you’d time-box any input with diminishing returns and rising cost — a set window, not an open tab. Second, treat the concrete steps in tiered preparedness as the antidote, not the homework: building a Tier 1 reserve or joining a local network (see community and local networks) converts free-floating anxiety into a specific, finishable task, which is exactly the mechanism the research points to.
