Why this has changed
AI-assisted tools have measurably lowered the skill and cost required to run convincing phishing campaigns and probe for common vulnerabilities — documented reporting has shown large year-over-year increases in phishing volume correlated with the availability of generative AI tools. Home networks, historically an afterthought compared to corporate security, are increasingly a soft target.
Core hardening steps
- Router firmware kept current, with the default admin password changed and remote administration disabled unless you specifically need it.
- A separate guest network for smart-home devices and visitors, isolated from the network your computers and financial accounts sit on.
- Automatic OS and application updates enabled on every household device — the majority of successful intrusions exploit already-patched vulnerabilities on devices that were never updated.
- A password manager with unique, generated passwords, paired with hardware security keys where supported (see digital identity hardening).
- Reviewing smart-home and IoT device permissions periodically — many default to broad data collection and weak security that vendors rarely prioritize fixing.
The AI-specific addition
Be specifically skeptical of AI-generated phishing content, which has become fluent enough that the old advice (“watch for bad grammar”) no longer reliably works. Verification habits — checking a sender’s actual address, calling a known number to confirm a request — now matter more than spotting stylistic tells.
Priority order
If you can only do one thing this week: enable automatic updates everywhere and turn on a password manager. Both are free, take under an hour, and close the two most commonly exploited gaps.
